Robla School District Superintendent Ruben Reyes Announces His Retirement

Robla School District Superintendent Ruben Reyes recently announced his plan to retire at the conclusion of the current school year, drawing to a close his 13-year service as Superintendent.

“It has been my honor to serve this community,” said Reyes. “The greatest pleasure I have had is coming to know the wonderful families that are part of Robla. I have been here long enough to meet the children of the children we have served, and I am grateful for the support you have all shown to me and to the district.”

According to Governing Board President Craig DeLuz, a search for the District’s next superintendent will begin immediately.  “Ruben has been an exemplary superintendent whose leadership has guided our District through unprecedented challenges, including a global pandemic,” said DeLuz. “He is a selfless and effective administrator who leaves behind a decades-long legacy of putting first the needs of students and our Robla School District family.”

The Governing Board began discussions about the search, which they anticipate concluding well before the end of Reyes’ tenure in June, at their regular meeting in January. Regular updates on the search process and opportunities to provide input will be provided to the public and more information will be available on the District’s website in the coming week.

Superintendent Reyes is retiring after 39 years in education, first as a bilingual first grade teacher in the Washington Unified School District, and then in the Robla community, where he first served as a Reading Specialist at Taylor Street Elementary School in 1998. He then served as Coordinator of English Learners Services, where he was able to help shape the programs that support our students who are learning to speak English, including creating EL Support Teacher positions at each school, the Bilingual Community Outreach Assistant positions, and training teachers on effective instruction for English Learners. These continue to be impactful programs and services for the district’s students.

In the ensuing 26 years, Reyes served as principal at Main Avenue School before his appointment as Superintendent in 2010.

During his tenure, the support and well-being of Robla School District students and families were at the center of the district’s work, including:

  • Terrific 10 Student Recognition
  • Parent Empowerment Dinners for Latin Heritage Month, Black History Month, and Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
  • Voter approval of funding two facilities bonds for the district, resulting in entirely new buildings at each of the schools, resulting in structural and aesthetic improvements and updated classrooms with modern technology and furniture.
  • Establishment of programs and services that help meet the needs of students and to help them to thrive and grow, including: helping teachers learn about effective teaching strategies; intervention teachers and assistants; Hazel Health; Kindergarten to College; social emotional learning and hiring qualified and dedicated staff members who help students with their emotional and social needs as well as their physical needs;
  • Creation of physical education, art, and technology enrichment programs.
  • Collaborative relationships developed with organizations that support students and staff, including: the Roberts Family Development Center, Capital Region United Way, Sacramento Republic Football Club, the Optimists, Schools First and so many more.

The Robla Human Resources Chief will be working with the Robla School Board to begin searching for a new superintendent. Staff, parents and community members will be invited to attend a future community meeting to provide their feedback to the Board about what attributes the community would like to see in the district’s new leader. More details will be posted on the district’s website, calendar and social media.
